Cleveland Animal Protective League

Designing architecture for the compassionate care of animals.

Cleveland Animal Protective League is one of the oldest and largest animal shelters in Northeast Ohio. Offering a wide range of services including pet adoption, veterinary services and pet financial assistance for Cuyahoga County residents. The Cleveland APL has been on the same site since the early 1900s and has been in its current facility since the 1980s. Due to growing demand and changes in veterinary practices, the APL undertook a campaign to reorganize their current space and to expand their facility.

The expansion and renovation of the Cleveland Animal Protective League involved altering the entire 28,000-square-foot existing facility. It also included an additional 10,000 square feet of advanced medical care, improved garage/storage functions, and upgraded community rooms. The exterior upgrades improved the civic prominence of the building by creating graphic signage and wayfinding elements. All of the interior and exterior modifications happened without losing operations for the 14,000 animals that pass through each year.

The row of animal exam tables allows for 4-legged patients to be treated in a fully functional space.
