Westwood Commons

Building ground up within extisting parameters.

Westwood Commons is a shopping center located in the center of Strongsville, Ohio that is quickly becoming the area’s destination for its variety of restaurants and shops. A variance was sought so the new building could be located closer to the street and articulated to create a gateway and downtown effect. This also created a better match to the older existing structures across the street and allowed for pedestrian connections to surrounding buildings, including the historic Strong House and parking at the Strongsville Commons City Building.

A detail shot of the exterior material choices of metal, wood, and multiple brick colors.

Part of the project was the construction of a new 10,900 square-foot building shell with four demised tenant spaces for retail or restaurant use. The new building is located at the street with parking at the rear to reflect existing historic buildings while the existing building is at the back of the site. Grade changes from the new site to the existing site were overcome with stepping the floor elevations of the new building into three levels and connecting the parking lots. Exterior renovations to the existing building brought the materials and design language closer to match the new construction. A water runoff retention system was developed and installed under the parking lot for the site that was oversized to accommodate additional runoff from adjacent city-owned property. The system helped alleviate ongoing runoff problems for the city.
