The changing landscape of retail has left millions of square feet of building abandoned due to obsolete brands. Re-purposing these spaces and finding new uses will be one of the challenges of the 21st Century. This concept for an adaptive reuse of a big box store into a contemporary wellness center shows the possibilities of these flexible buildings to find new life. The base building was broken into three components: a restaurant, a gym, and a wellness center. Each element caters to a different aspect for promoting health. Inside the wellness center, the building was perforated with a number of courtyards to ensure a continual connection between the visitor and nature. This necessary addition further extends the holistic mission of the facility treating both the mind and the body.
